Agricultural emissions have never been priced in the Emissions Trading Scheme, and the question of whether and how they should be has been proposed, deferred and redesigned repeatedly. The commercial requirement to measure has arrived anyway.
Why it is arriving commercially
Processors, banks and export customers are asking. Large customers disclosing their own value chain emissions need supplier data, and that requirement passes down through the chain.
For farmers the practical position is that an emissions number is becoming a condition of supply for premium markets rather than a regulatory obligation. Farms with credible data are better placed in those conversations than farms starting from scratch.
What is actually measured
Agricultural emissions come from three main sources:
- Methane from enteric fermentation — the largest source on most pastoral farms, driven by the amount of feed eaten by ruminants.
- Nitrous oxide from nitrogen in urine, dung and fertiliser applied to soils.
- Carbon dioxide from fuel, electricity and some inputs, which is comparatively small on pastoral farms.
Methane and nitrous oxide are the substantive numbers, and both track closely with feed eaten and nitrogen applied.
What the calculation needs
Emissions calculators for New Zealand farms use inputs you largely already record:
- Stock numbers by class and by month.
- Production — milksolids, liveweight sold, wool.
- Nitrogen fertiliser applied, by type and amount.
- Supplementary feed brought in.
- Fuel and electricity use.
- Effective area.
The quality of the number depends entirely on the quality of those records. Farms with accurate stock reconciliation and fertiliser records produce a defensible figure quickly; those without spend time reconstructing.
Intensity is the measure that matters
Total farm emissions rise with production. What customers and processors generally look at is emissions per unit of product — per kilogram of milksolids or per kilogram of meat.
That distinction matters commercially and practically. Reducing total emissions by producing less is not what the market is asking for. Reducing emissions per unit of output is.
New Zealand pastoral systems generally perform well on intensity by international comparison, which is a genuine commercial position and one worth being able to evidence rather than assert.
What actually reduces the number
Most effective levers improve farm efficiency at the same time, which is why they are worth doing regardless of the emissions position:
- Improved feed conversion — better genetics, better animal health, better pasture quality. More product from the same feed reduces intensity directly.
- Reduced nitrogen fertiliser where soil testing shows it is not producing a response. Nitrous oxide follows nitrogen applied, and over-application is common.
- Culling unproductive stock earlier, since low-producing animals emit while producing little.
- Reduced replacement rates through better longevity, which lowers the non-productive proportion of the herd.
- Effluent management, which affects nitrous oxide losses.
Technologies including methane inhibitors and vaccines have been in development and their availability and approval status should be checked directly rather than assumed.
Sequestration and forestry
Trees on farm absorb carbon, and registered post-1989 forest in the ETS can earn units. Riparian planting, shelter belts and woodlots have value in reporting even where not ETS-registered, and recording what you have planted is worth doing.
ETS registration is a long-term commitment with harvest liabilities attached, and the decision deserves proper advice rather than enthusiasm about a carbon price.
Practical sequence
- Get your stock, fertiliser and feed records into a state where they can be used.
- Run a calculation using a recognised tool, ideally with your farm adviser or through your processor’s programme.
- Look at intensity, not just total.
- Identify the two or three efficiency changes with the best combined production and emissions effect.
- Repeat annually so you have a trend rather than a point.
