Engineering and technical consultancy work comes overwhelmingly through referral and reputation rather than advertising. In a market as small as New Zealand, where the relevant community for any specialism is a few hundred people, that is both an advantage and a constraint.
Referrals come from a narrower group than you think
For most technical practices, work comes from a small number of sources: repeat clients, other consultants in adjacent disciplines, contractors, and council or regulatory staff who encounter your work.
That last group is underrated. Processing officers and reviewing engineers see a great deal of work, and a practice whose documentation is consistently complete and whose producer statements are properly supported develops a reputation among exactly the people clients ask for recommendations.
Conversely, a practice that generates repeated information requests acquires the opposite reputation, and nobody tells them.
What actually builds technical reputation
- Doing what you said, on the date you said. Reliability is scarcer than technical excellence and more talked about.
- Documentation that is complete first time. This saves the client money and the reviewer time, and both notice.
- Being straight about risk and uncertainty. Consultants who identify problems early and honestly are trusted; those who discover them late are not.
- Explaining clearly to non-technical clients. Most clients cannot assess your technical work. They assess whether you made sense.
- Saying no to work outside your competence, and referring it on. This builds more goodwill than taking it and struggling.
Visible expertise
In technical fields, demonstrated knowledge travels further than promotion. Approaches that work:
- Writing about problems you have actually solved — a technical note, a case study, an explanation of a code change and what it means practically. This is genuinely useful to peers and clients and it is searchable.
- Presenting at industry events and branch meetings. Small audiences of exactly the right people.
- Contributing to industry bodies, standards work and technical committees, which puts you among the people who set practice.
- Answering questions in professional forums without pitching.
What does not work well: generic marketing content, capability statements that could describe any firm, and social media activity unconnected to technical substance.
Case studies, carefully
Project case studies are the most useful marketing asset a technical practice has, and they require care:
- Get client consent in writing before publishing anything identifiable.
- Check confidentiality obligations in your engagement terms, which frequently restrict disclosure.
- Do not use project photography you do not have rights to.
- Describe your actual contribution accurately. Overstating your role on a project where others led is noticed in a small market and does lasting damage.
Repeat work is the real asset
Winning a new client costs proposal time, relationship building and frequently a competitive price. Repeat work from an existing client costs a phone call.
What generates repeat work:
- Staying in contact between projects, without a pitch.
- Delivering the last project without drama.
- Being easy to deal with administratively — invoicing correctly, responding promptly.
- Understanding the client’s business rather than only the technical problem.
Referral relationships with other consultants
Architects, planners, surveyors, contractors and other engineering disciplines all refer work. Those relationships are built by being good to work with on shared projects rather than by asking for referrals.
Reciprocity matters. A practice that receives referrals and never passes any on will find the flow reduces.
Public sector work
Where government work is relevant, getting onto the appropriate panel or prequalification arrangement is frequently worth more than any individual bid, since it determines eligibility. That is a separate process from bidding and worth pursuing deliberately.
Professional obligations
Marketing must not be misleading. Claims about qualifications, registration status and experience must be accurate, and the Fair Trading Act applies to professional services as much as to products. Overstating capability is both a regulatory risk and a reputational one in a market where everyone knows everyone.
